Pink Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit Guide
Grow fresh Pink Oyster mushrooms at home with a few simple steps. Your kit is already colonized and ready to begin fruiting.
Before You Begin
Place your grow kit in a location with:
- Indirect natural light
- Good fresh-air circulation
- Temperatures between 65°F and 80°F
- No direct sunlight, heaters, or strong drafts
Pink Oyster mushrooms prefer warmer conditions than Blue Oyster mushrooms. Temperatures around 70°F to 80°F generally work well.
Step 1: Open the Grow Window
Locate the marked growing window on the box.
Cut an X-shaped opening through the plastic grow bag behind the window. Each cut should be approximately 2 to 3 inches long.
Do not remove the substrate block from the plastic bag. The bag helps retain moisture and protects the rest of the block.
Step 2: Mist the Opening
Mist the cut opening with clean water 2 to 3 times per day.
The exposed surface should remain slightly moist, but it should not be dripping or soaked. Avoid allowing water to pool inside the box.
A fine-mist spray bottle works best.
Step 3: Provide Light and Fresh Air
Place the kit near a window or in a room with indirect light.
Pink Oyster mushrooms do not need direct sunlight, but some light helps the mushrooms grow in the correct direction and develop properly.
They also need regular fresh air. Do not place the kit inside a closed cabinet, sealed container, or poorly ventilated area.
Step 4: Watch for Mushroom Pins
Small pink mushroom pins may begin appearing around the opening within approximately 5 to 10 days.
Continue misting the opening regularly. Once the mushrooms begin forming, mist lightly above or around the cluster instead of spraying the mushrooms heavily at close range.
Pink Oyster mushrooms can grow very quickly after pins appear.
Step 5: Harvest the Mushrooms
Harvest when:
- The caps have opened and begun to flatten
- The edges are still slightly curved downward
- The mushrooms remain firm and brightly colored
Do not wait until the caps become very flat, dry, curled upward, or begin releasing large amounts of spores.
Hold the entire cluster near the base and gently twist and pull it away from the block. You may also use a clean knife to cut the cluster close to the substrate.
Harvest the full cluster at one time.
Growing a Second Flush
After harvesting:
- Remove any loose mushroom material from the opening.
- Continue misting the cut area 2 to 3 times per day.
- Keep the kit in the same warm, well-lit location.
- Allow the block time to rest.
A second flush may begin within approximately 1 to 3 weeks. Later harvests are often smaller than the first.
Troubleshooting
The kit is not producing mushrooms
Make sure the opening remains moist and the kit is receiving indirect light and fresh air. Pink Oyster mushrooms may grow slowly when temperatures are too cool.
The mushrooms have long stems and small caps
This usually means they need more fresh air. Move the kit to a more open location with better circulation.
The mushrooms look dry or cracked
Increase misting slightly and move the kit away from fans, heaters, air-conditioning vents, and direct sunlight.
The mushrooms are pale pink or cream-colored
Pink Oyster color can vary based on temperature, maturity, genetics, and lighting. The color may fade as the mushrooms mature or when growing conditions are especially warm.
The mushrooms are growing underneath the plastic
This can happen when light reaches other areas of the block. Keep the remaining bag closed and direct light toward the intended grow opening.
The block has yellow or amber liquid
Small amounts of yellow or amber liquid can be normal mushroom metabolites. A strong unpleasant odor, slimy texture, or spreading green mold may indicate contamination.
Storage Before Starting
For best results, begin fruiting your Pink Oyster kit soon after delivery.
If you must delay starting it, store the kit in a cool location for a short period. Pink Oyster mushrooms are a warm-weather species and generally do not tolerate extended refrigeration as well as cooler-weather oyster varieties.
Do not freeze the kit.
Cooking and Storage
Pink Oyster mushrooms are best eaten cooked.
After harvesting:
- Store them in a paper bag or loosely covered container
- Keep them refrigerated
- Use them as soon as possible for the best texture and flavor
