Blue Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit Guide
Grow fresh Blue Oyster mushrooms at home with a few simple steps. Your kit is already fully colonized and ready to fruit.
Before You Begin
Place the kit in a location with:
- Indirect natural light
- Fresh air circulation
- A temperature between 55°F and 70°F
- No direct sunlight, heaters, or strong drafts
Blue Oyster mushrooms prefer cooler conditions. Warmer temperatures may produce lighter-colored mushrooms and slower growth.
Step 1: Open the Grow Window
Locate the marked grow window on the box.
Cut an X-shaped opening through the plastic grow bag behind the window. Each cut should be approximately 2 to 3 inches long.
Do not remove the substrate block from the bag. Leave the remaining plastic closed so the block retains moisture.
Step 2: Mist the Opening
Mist the cut area with clean water 2 to 3 times per day.
Use enough water to keep the surface slightly moist, but do not soak the block or allow standing water to collect inside the box.
A fine-mist spray bottle works best.
Step 3: Provide Light and Fresh Air
Place the kit near a window or in a room with indirect light.
Mushrooms do not need direct sunlight, but they do need some light to grow in the correct direction and develop normally.
Blue Oyster mushrooms also need fresh air. Avoid placing the kit inside a closed cabinet, sealed container, or small area with stagnant air.
Step 4: Watch for Pins
Small mushroom pins may begin forming around the cut opening within approximately 5 to 10 days.
Continue misting regularly. Once pins appear, avoid spraying them heavily at close range. Mist lightly above or around the mushrooms instead.
The cluster can grow quickly once pinning begins.
Step 5: Harvest the Mushrooms
Harvest when:
- The caps have opened and begun to flatten
- The edges are still slightly curved downward
- The mushrooms feel firm and fresh
Do not wait until the caps curl sharply upward or begin releasing large amounts of spores.
Hold the entire cluster near the base and gently twist and pull it away from the block. You may also use a clean knife to cut the cluster close to the substrate.
Blue Oyster mushrooms are best harvested as one complete cluster.
Growing a Second Flush
After harvesting:
- Remove any loose mushroom material from the opening.
- Continue misting the cut area 2 to 3 times per day.
- Keep the kit in the same cool, well-lit location.
- Allow the block to rest.
A second flush may begin within 1 to 3 weeks. Later harvests are usually smaller than the first.
Troubleshooting
The kit is not pinning
Check that the kit is receiving indirect light, fresh air, and regular misting. Temperatures above 70°F may slow Blue Oyster development.
The mushrooms have long stems and small caps
This usually indicates insufficient fresh air. Move the kit to a more open location with better air circulation.
The mushrooms look dry or cracked
Increase misting slightly and move the kit away from heaters, fans, vents, or direct sunlight.
The mushrooms are pale or gray instead of blue
Color varies based on temperature, genetics, maturity, and lighting. Cooler conditions generally produce deeper blue-gray caps.
The block has yellow liquid
Small amounts of yellow or amber liquid can be normal mushroom metabolites. A strong foul odor, slimy texture, or spreading green mold may indicate contamination.
Storage Before Starting
Store the unopened kit in a cool place away from direct sunlight.
For best results, begin fruiting the kit soon after delivery. If necessary, short-term refrigeration can help slow growth, but do not freeze the kit.
